Put away those baggy jeans, boys. That shrug you bought last year? Shrug it off and stuff it way back in your bureau drawer, girls. That outfit fit right in last year. But this year, those jeans and that shrug will look like . . . well, last year's clothes. This year, think layers. Think vintage T-shirts. Think earth tones. And we don't need to tell you not to think like your parents. "Tweens and early teens do not reflect the styles of their parents," says Nathan Welch, merchandising manager for Gap Kids in Denver. "They want their own look. Purple is in for adults. Kids want more muted tones. It's a nice, clean look this year." According to the National Retail Federation, the average student will spend more than $230 on back-to-school clothing and accessories this fall.
Fashion photographer Testino to put Diana image on the block
Peruvian photographer Mario Testino, who took the last official portraits of Diana, Princess of Wales, is set to auction off one of his images for charity. Testino will auction his photo depicting a smiling Diana in a black dress in London this fall to raise funds for families affected by the destructive earthquake that rocked his homeland on Aug. 15. The auction of Mario Testino's 1997 portrait of the late Diana, Princess of Wales, will benefit Peruvian families suffering in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. The image is also currently on display at London's National Portrait Gallery. (Lefteris Pitarakis/Associated Press) The image set to cross the block comes from the photo session Testino conducted with Diana in February 1997 for a spread in Vanity Fair magazine.

Citizenship ceremony shows Mexicans taking legal path
Mexico. The ceremony illustrated that many people who originally are from Mexico are choosing the air-conditioned comfort of a courtroom naturalization proceeding over the desert heat of an illegal border crossing and the subsequent risk of deportation. Ten of the 27 people who took the citizenship oath Wednesday are from Mexico. No other country had more than two natives who became naturalized citizens. Roberto Barbosa Alvarez, 38, of Broken Arrow said he studied every day for two months for the 100-question test that prospective citizens must take. Alvarez's efforts paid off, as he earned a perfect score, he said. He said that if fellow natives of Mexico who are legally in the United States "have a chance to become a citizen, they should do it now." A bill to revamp the country's immigration system derailed in late June in the Senate, but the issue is not going away.
Letters to the Editor: Aug. 25, 2007
We have an epidemic here in Collier County, and some people might find this hard to believe. That epidemic is accidental deaths from drug overdose. I speak to this subject with firsthand knowledge as I am a sudden death grief counselor with Project HELP Inc. Here at our center, we work closely with the medical examiner. In 2006 there were 53 confirmed deaths from drug overdose and that number may rise as some cases are still pending. A drug overdose is the accidental or intentional use of a drug in an amount that is higher than normal. Although drug-overdose deaths are historically associated with urban areas, that is not necessarily true. This epidemic affects people of all ages, and from all walks of life. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, accidental death from drug overdose has doubled in recent years and is now the second-leading cause of accidental death in this country.
