De-bunking the mystery of matching dorm mates

An 18-year-old from Southern California can stress about so much on move-in day at San Francisco State University. Will all of the shoes she's brought fit into her half of a 12-by-15 room? Does that nursery-school playground below her window mean that 4-year-olds will be delivering her wake-up call? And where, exactly, do those BART trains she's heard about stop?

The one thing she doesn't have to dwell on anymore as she makes her first home away from home: Who's that 18-year-old in the other bed? Ashley Hillstead, a blonde from just outside of Los Angeles, and Ashley Hollinger, a brunette from the San Fernando Valley, represent a new generation of freshman roommates who've chosen each other via e-mail and social networking sites.

On move-in day, they stood united, two would-be fashion buyers a bit aghast at the spartan quarters.

Reel Talent: First Films by Legendary Directors

Few filmmakers make a classic on their first try. Most toil away in film schools, on weekends, scraping together friends, sets and ideas to fashion their student works. Often, the visions of future careers can be glimpsed in these movies built from blood, sweat and tears -- famously, George Lucas parlayed his Electronic Labyrinth THX 1138 4EB into his first feature-length project and of the 12 films included in this first-of-its-kind set, many future directors are seen fine-tuning tone and approach.

Split across two discs, Reel Talent: First Films by Legendary Directors is a smorgasbord of student films culled from the archives of the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts. While it's quite a stretch to call every director included here "legendary" (Shawn Levy and Jon Turteltaub? Really?), this selection of a dozen short films is an uneven but fascinating look at the scrappy origins of many Hollywood power players.

Cajon, Colton showing few cracks in San Andreas race

Forget about every other city in California. According to Arroyo Valley coach Tony DiThomas, San Bernardino has the most spirited inter-city rivalries in the state.

"I truly believe that there's no other city where the emotions are there, week in and week out," DiThomas said. "It doesn't matter if it's Arroyo against Cajon, Pacific against San Gorgonio, San Bernardino against Cajon, the emotion is always there. No matter what the matchup is, every team is A rival with each other and there's not a week off."

The only school in the San Andreas League that isn't in San Bernardino is Colton, but the Yellowjackets aren't exactly overlooked. When you win the league in your first year back in undefeated fashion, as the Yellowjackets did, a bulls-eye takes shape.

Make no mistake about it, the league season will see some fireworks when it opens on Oct.
